To determine if you have mental health coverage through your insurance carrier, the first thing you should do is call them. As a courtesey to you, I will also obtain your insurance information prior to the first visit to check basic coverage.
Please make sure to understand that it is your resonsibility to obtain full coverage benefits. Some helpful questions you can ask your insurance company:
- What are my mental health benefits?
- What is the coverage amount per therapy session?
- How many therapy sessions does my plan cover?
- How much does my insurance pay for an out-of-network provider?
- Is approval required from my primary care physician?
If you choose not to use health insurance or do not have coverage, here are some benefits of private pay:
Although the initial thought may be "why pay out of pocket when I can use my insurance?", but by not using your insurance, I am able to provide better care to my clients, due to care not being dictated by the insurance companies.
Currently insurance companies are requiring only diagnosable conditions to be covered, as well as when and how often and how long a therapist can see a client, which really limits the support I can provide. Some clients may be in a place where they just need support and coping mechanisms due to going through some type of life stressor, not necessarily a mental health diagnosis. By not using insurance, I am able to work with clients for as many sessions as they need, whether they have a diagnosis or not, and provide the care that I feel is best vs the insurance company making that decision.
Pros to Using Insurance:
-Lower out of pocket fees
Cons to Using Insurance:
-Length of treatment and frequency is dictated by insurance companies.
-Treatment options are limited to certain providers who take your insurance
-Must have a mental health diagnosis
-Services must be deemed "medically necessary" in order for insurance to cover sessions
-You may still need to pay out of pocket until you meet your deductible
Paying Privately gives you the flexibility to get the care you need for any length of time without a diagnosis and without insurance determining "medically necessity." Ultimately, the therapist can make the decisions regarding care vs the insurance company, which will benefit the client in the long run.
